The example below shows the appropriate use of gutter for the text along the top left and bottom edges of the design.

In typography the term gutter refers to the space between columns of type usually determined by the number and width of columns and the overall width of the area to be filled. Depending on the size of the book the gutter can be anywhere from 1 4 1 2. When laying out pages gutters should not be so narrow that columns run together. A gutter margin can smaller for books with less curve and larger for books with more curve.

Generally speaking 0 5 inches for your gutter margin is recommended for most books. In the crop tool increase the page width to 9 11 inches with the center box checked. Gutter width can take up 1 4 to 1 2 from the page therefore there must be an extra 1 4 1 2 of safety margin space on the side of the page where the gutter spine will be.
